Practical EHCP guidance for parents navigating the UK SEND system

Turn EHCP overwhelm into a clear, confident plan

This EHCP & ME system is designed to guide you through every stage of the EHCP journey — from your first concerns, through applications, to draft plans, tribunals, and support with school anxiety.

It breaks everything down into clear, manageable steps, so you know exactly what your child is entitled to, what to ask for, and how to avoid the mistakes that leave so many parents feeling lost or unheard.

No jargon. No guessing. Just clear, practical guidance you can actually use.

Instead of one overwhelming course, you can choose the support that matches where you are right now — so you get exactly what you need, when you need it.

  • Written by a SEND advocate and parent with lived experience of the system

Choose your starting point

Where are you in your EHCP journey right now?

You don’t need to figure everything out at once. Start with the stage you’re in, get clear on what to do next, and come back for the next step when you’re ready.

Stage 1 • Application

EHCP & ME: First Concerns & EHCP Applicati-ons

You’re starting to realise your child needs more support — but you’re not sure what to do, what your rights are, or how to begin the EHCP process properly.

  • Understand if an EHCP is the right step

  • Learn how to request an assessment correctly

  • Avoid the common mistakes that lead to refusals

Best for: Parents or carers in England starting to explore SEND support & EHCPs for your child.

Stage 2 • Assessment, Refusals & Tribunal

EHCP & ME: Assessment, Refusals & Tribunal

You’re already in the system — but things aren’t going to plan. You may be preparing for an assessment and unsure what to expect, facing delays, a refusal, or being told your child doesn’t qualify.

  • Understand what the law actually says

  • Challenge refusals and poor decisions confidently

  • Prepare properly for tribunal and next steps

Best for: If you’re going through an EHC needs assessment, preparing for one, or have been refused and don’t know what to do next.

Stage 3 • Drafts & reviews

EHCP & ME: Draft EHCPs, Reviews & Reports

You have an EHCP (or draft), but something doesn’t feel right — the wording is vague, support isn’t specific, or it’s not being followed properly.

  • Strengthen Sections B, F and I

  • Make sure provision is clear and enforceable

  • Go into meetings knowing exactly what to say

Best for: If you have a draft EHCP or annual review and need to challenge it, strengthen it, or make sure it actually reflects your child’s needs.

Additional • EBSA / School Anxiety Support

EHCP & ME: School Anxiety & EBSA Support

Your child is struggling to attend school, and everything feels like a battle. You’re being told to push, but you know something deeper is going on.

  • Understand why your child is saying “I can’t”

  • Learn what schools and LAs should be doing legally

  • Find a way forward that doesn’t cause more trauma

Best for: If your child is struggling to attend school and everything feels like a battle — you know something deeper is going on, and you don’t have to let the system push you into doing something that’s hurting your child.

“I would recommend your service to other parents needing guidance at the draft stage. It took a huge weight off of my shoulders, having someone with depths of knowledge. There was nothing throughout the process, in which I felt could have been better.”

Meet the founder

A SEN professional who has sat on both sides of the table

I’m Emily.

I created EHCP & ME because I know first-hand how overwhelming and exhausting the SEND system can be for families.

I’m a mum to three neurodivergent children, and like so many parents, I found myself trying to navigate a system that felt confusing, inconsistent and, at times, completely against us.

I remember sitting in meetings, reading reports, and being told things that didn’t sit right — but not knowing enough to challenge them.

I was trying to do the best for my child… without fully understanding the system I was up against.

So I did what most parents end up doing.

I started researching.

Late nights, endless documents, trying to work out what the law actually says — and what my child was truly entitled to.

And that’s when everything changed.

I realised something parents are rarely told:

The law is there to protect our children — but only if you know how to use it.

Once I understood the EHCP process and SEND law, I was able to advocate with clarity and confidence — and everything shifted.

That’s why I created EHCP & ME.

To give parents the knowledge, tools and confidence I wish I’d had from the beginning.

Because no parent should feel unsure, dismissed, or out of their depth.

And no child should miss out on support simply because their parent wasn’t given the right information.

Now I help parents understand their rights and navigate the system with confidence — without having to figure it all out alone.

Because when you understand the system…

You stop second-guessing yourself.

And you start making informed, powerful decisions for your child.
